Emergencies Never Come At a Good Time

I am so excited to be in the finishing stages of our book, Living Beyond Richwhich is due out in June 2012.  I am hopeful the book wil

l give hope and inspiration to many.

In Living Beyond Rich, I tell our own story of how our finance journey started due to an emergency that found its way into our life. At the time, we questioned, why is this emergency happening to us?

Do you ever find yourself asking yourself, “why do emergencies strike our lives”?

The following is taken out of Living Beyond Rich:

Pastor Bob Merritt, author of When Life Isn’t Working, put emergencies in perspective when he talked about the hills and valleys in our lifetime. It centered on a bible verse that refers to “WHEN trouble comes our way” NOT “IF trouble comes our way.” He went on to clarify that God never promised that we wouldn’t have troubles, instead God clearly stated that WHEN trouble comes our way to rely on Him.

What? We must have skipped over that part in the bible. We thought if we were faithful followers, prayed for money fixes, and did good things when we could avoid pain in our lives…wasn’t that right?

He illustrated the three phases in EVERYONE’S path when it comes to storms in our lives. He summed it up wonderfully simply by stating the following is true for all of us:

  1. We were either getting ready to head into a storm.
  2. We were in a storm.
  3. We were coming out of a storm.

What an incredible illustration of what the daily struggles in life really look like. Instead of expecting emergencies, we had felt cheated when emergencies came our way.

When we look back, we realize we had been living our financial life reactively instead of proactively. We weren’t looking for storms…we were counting on constant sunshine.

Having gone through this experience, our perspectives have certainly been changed when it comes to realizing that getting our lives in order today, will help us tomorrow.

While getting one’s finances in order doesn’t prevent emergencies from striking our lives, it certainly mitigates the frequency of emergencies.

It is hard to put into words how much more peaceful and joyful our lives are today compared to 3 years ago. The weight of paying off over $146,0000 worth of debt and paying cash for over $30,000 worth of medical related expenses is absolutely freeing.

If you are struggling or know someone that is struggling with finances today, please know that there is hope. With faith, perseverance and a plan to action, we can ALL do extraordinary things in life and that includes getting our finances in order.

What actions are you taking today to help mitigate emergencies tomorrow?

Forgiveness – One Tough Thing to Do!

Guilt and shame are many times associated with being in debt. Even though 70% of us today live paycheck to paycheck, being in debt can feel like you are alone.

Last night at church, we had a incredibly moving service. The service centered around forgiveness. We had some amazing guests share

Robert Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions

Robert Plutchik's Wheel of Emotions (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

their story. The intro started with a  CBS new story entitled: Love thy neighbor: Son’s killer moves next door.

To listen to this incredibly strong mother whose son was murdered forgive her son’s murder and then encourage a friendship with this young man was beyond incredible. To hear this 35-year-old man’s story of killing this mom’s son when he was 16 years old and then having the son’s mom befriend him was extremely moving.

It was an incredible example of what forgiveness of others and oneself is.

In getting to talk and meet with people on our freedom finance journey, it has been joyful to give a message that being disorganized in one’s  finances can happen to anyone. It doesn’t matter their zip code, what they do for a living, or how many good deeds they have done – debt touches many.

A key reason why people get stuck in either starting on their freedom debt journey or keeping on their journey is due to guilt and/or shame. Guilt and shame robs us of time, energy, and making our way to becoming the persons we were meant to be. By ditching guilt and shame, we are able to forgive ourselves and finally move on to being where we want to be.

If you are in debt today and living a life of embarrassment, guilt, and/or shame when it comes to your finances, ditch the negative feelings and instead, channel them into positive actions that will improve your situation. In doing so, you will become empowered to start taking steps to living a life of financial freedom and peace.

Are You Passionate About Your Work?

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed on several podcast episodes by Dr. Pei Kang as well as her husband, author and coach, Joel Boggess from 4 Points Coaching. What a treat it was to meet both of them.

In reading Joel’s new ebook, Passion, it struck me how we all have a yearning in life to do something that matters in our lives, however most people live their lives as “spectators.”

The stories of people finding their passion in doing the work they love leaves one wanting to jump up and cheer. His message is sure to strengthen one’s desire to take courage to seek out the their own passions in the work they do.

“We’re Going to Disney” – Goal When Debt is Eliminated – Trip is Getting Closer!

Disney pincess

Image via Wikipedia

Bob and I celebrated our 20th anniversary earlier this week. It was a time of reflection as we chuckled at the grand things we had planned to do when we talked about this great occasion years ago. Would we go on a cruise? Would we take a two-week vacation overseas as a family?

Since we started our debt elimination journey almost 3 years ago, we have focused on the goal of paying off our debt. Working extra jobs, time away from the family, scrimping, doing without, and making do with what we have is how we have been living. Our house needs some serious updating, our newest car has over 160,000 miles, our clothes are getting worn, and my running shoes are from my Ironman Triathlon training days three years ago. It feels like we have been running an extremely long marathon and we are getting close to the end, but not quite there.

So, what did we do for our 20th anniversary? We splurged and bought 2 toilet seats and 3 bags of water softener salt. A far cry from what we pictured a few years ago, but pure luxury today!

We made a commitment that instead of some grand trip and/or gifts, we would give our family the gift of putting the pedal to the medal and getting this debt elimination journey finished. Bob and I would want nothing more than to be DONE with all of our debt (except our 1st mortgage) by New Years Eve of 2012. It is a enormous and overwhelming goal to think of, however, we know that by setting this goal, it will get us there faster.

When we are done, we can’t wait to pay CASH for a Disney type vacation and celebrate our years of marriage and our incredible journey of success with our kids. Our kids and us know that EACH and EVERY dollar we toss at our debt gets us to our trip sooner.

Sitting here today, I am dreaming what it would be like blogging from our Disney type trip around this time next year. I thought it would be fun to write a note to my debt free future self to look back on…here it goes:

This is March 2012 Jen writing a note to my future debt free self. We are SO READY to be DONE RIGHT NOW!  The last three years have been a time of discipline, sacrifice, and hard work and we know our family has learned their lesson well. While at the time it seems like forever, but looking back the years have gone by in a blink of the eye. The next 9 or so months feel like an enternity, but we know we are going to make it and can’t wait to read back on this post remembering the feeling of  wanting to be debt free so badly. We have pictured and dreamed about that debt free day every day along our journey. It is what keeps us going day after day. Within the next month, our debt left to pay on will drop down to the 30′s – it seems like a ton, however, when we see we have paid off $142,000 and paid cash for over $30,000 worth of medical, we know we can do this. So, to my future self, I say hug your kids and husband…take a break to celebrate and enjoy the victory. See you soon. Sincerely,

The Jen from March 2012

Many blessings and thanks for reading!

Jen McDonough’s Obituary – Keeping the End In Mind to a AWESOME Life!

Didn't We Almost Have It All

Image via Wikipedia

With the recently death of Whitney Houston, I found myself being caught up in a media segment about her life. My kids curiously asked me why this held my attention because normally our TV is only used for video games, movies and occasional sporting events.

My answer back was that I wanted a great obituary when I died and was learning from watching. They were a little confused at this statement. Rather than immediately explain, we watched 5 minutes of the media’s version of Whitney Houston’s life and details of her tragic young death as a family. Afterwards we had a lively and great discussion that centered on the importance of living a life we are proud of even during those times when we make mistakes throughout our journeys in life.

The conversation got me thinking about how I wanted my own obituary to sound. Would I let someone else write the end of my life that could include facts such as places of work, where I was born, where I died, dates, etc.  Geez … the thought has me yawning  just thinking about having a boring obituary – in addition, what a shame it would be to let someone else write out my life!

With that being said, I decided to become intentional about living and write my obituary ahead of time.Sounds strange to some, but why not?

Having the end in mind only helps us map out to where we want to go with our other goals in life right? Why not start with the final end in mind and work backwards.

So, here is a stab at what I would like for my obituary:

Jen McDonough lived an awesome life! She relished in her role as a daughter of God, mom, wife, daughter sister, mentor, advisor, and friend. She lived EACH day with intention, passion, purpose,  joy, happiness, and love. Her family and friends meant the world to her and she knew how very blessed she was each and every day – you could read it in her eyes and smile. She constantly dived out of her comfort zone in order to strive to be the person she became. In doing so, she set a great example for others to stretch beyond their own self perceived limits to live life beyond awesome.  She was deeply loved and loved deeply. In lieu of flowers, please spread a little joy to someone who needs it today.

What does your obituary look like? Are you letting the world decide how it should read or are you taking charge to write it the way you want it lived?

Shaved Legs Didn’t Make the Cut – Prioritization is a Key to Success

Without trying to sound cocky, I get asked regularly how do I get so many things done/accomplished. My first and foremost key to success is my GREAT and AWESOME family!

Some other keys that lead to my success on getting things done are GOALS and the practice of continuously prioritizing and reprioritizing things in my life as life seems to happen to us all.

To give a recent prioritization example, I will give you one that happened just tonight. Small sounding, but one I hope will make you smile.

For those that read Living Beyond Awesome, you may have remembered me mentioning my quirky group of bike riders. My one to two hour bike rides with them each week are a source of positive energy deposits for me to stay energized throughout the week.

I was excited as tonight was my night for biking indoors (spinning) with the crew. I am a bit embarrassed to admit, but I  forgot to shave my legs this morning before rushing off to work (in the winter, it only gets done one time a week compared to daily in the summer so it is vital that the winter days not be missed!). I had a small 45-minute window of opportunity to bike with my gang tonight since we had a few things going afterwards. I very much wanted to stop at the store to pick up some razors before going, but knew it would eat up at least 25 minutes of my precious 45 minutes of time.

The dilemma was now in front of me. Should I risk missing out on having one of my weekly  emotional and physical tank refills or just say what the heck?

My quirky bike group notices any new piece of gadget, speck of dirt, or riding gear one can possibly have, however, when it comes to looking at one personally, they are not quite as perceptive. I “hid” my Ironman tattoo for about 8 months before one of them noticed finally. Didn’t they ever wonder why I walked backwards each night when returning my bike? Didn’t they notice that I seemed to ride in back of the pack more after Ironman? Truthfully, the thought of having them find out about tattoo was worse that was worse my mom finding out.

I decided to take the risk that they would be their usual selves and not notice.

What was the outcome?

I had a GREAT time with my group with the 45 minutes we had together and even though I didn’t like having my smooth legs for spinning, it turned out just fine. Turns out the hair on my legs didn’t slow me down one bit!

So, when you are trying to get things done, remember we can’t always do everything. Priorities needs to be set and then reorganized as we go in life. Sometimes just winging it rather than missing out on things is worth it.

Thanks for reading and God bless.

“Be the Change You Want to See In This World” ~ Mama Lynn

I started to write this wonderfully brilliant blog to share with my readers, however, I deleted the whole darn thing as these quotes from Mama Lynn seems to sum up perfectly what I was trying to convey:

“Be the change you want to see in this world.” ~ Mama Lynn

“God doesn’t choose the qualified, he qualifies the chosen.”  ~ Mama Lynn

This ordinary lady rocks when it come to showing us that one person CAN truly make a difference. What a wonderful story to be able to watch and share: Light in Africa The Documentary. It is a story filled with empowerment, hope, and inspiration and one I hope you will have a chance to watch.

Thank you Mark Anderson for bringing to life this incredible woman’s story that shows us that we ALL have the ability to be extraordinary even when the ocean seems too overwhelming to boil.

Hills and Valleys We ALL Go Through In Our Lifetime – Turning Valleys Into Blessings

Robbie and Jen - 1st day of diagnosis January 12, 2009

January 12, 2012 marked our 3 year anniversary when our lives changed forever.  It was the day our Robbie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 7 years old. A day that we celebrate as it was a major turning point in our lives…one that turned out to be a huge blessing to our whole family, however, one of those blessings that didn’t “feel” like a blessing at the time.

Before this day, life is overall pretty darn awesome as I had just finished up completing my first Ironman Triathlon 2 months earlier (our story on that journey is now available in our newest book Living Beyond Awesome which dipped into the Top 100 Books under Amazon’s Transformation category last month). We literally woke up one morning feeling great and by that evening, our world had been turned upside down.

Throughout the next several weeks, it would be some of the hardest times in our lives. We would not only be emotionally devastated, but financially devastated at well.

In our newest book that is due out this year, Living Beyond Rich, we share our journey in the hopes that 70% of Americans who are currently living paycheck to paycheck will gain inspiration, motivation, and hope. Here is a excerpt from the book…a story our pastor told that rings true for all of us:

Our pastor did a sermon that put it in perspective for us when it came to emergencies. He talked about the hills and valleys in our lifetime. It centered bible verse that refers to “WHEN trouble comes your way” NOT “IF trouble comes your way.” He went on to clarify that God never promised that we wouldn’t have troubles, God clearly states that WHEN trouble comes our way to rely on Him.

What? I must have skipped over that part in the bible. I thought if we were faithful followers and did good things, we could avoid pain in our lives…wasn’t that right?

Our pastor illustrated that there were three phases in EVERYONE’S path that centered around where we were at when it came to storms hitting our lives.

  1. We were either getting ready to head into a storm.
  2. We were in a storm.
  3. We were coming out of a storm.

What an incredible illustration of what our troubles in life really look like. We had never looked at it this way before and therefore felt cheated when emergencies did come our way.

We were letting life happen to us versus us happening to life.

Rather than being intentionally prepared for those storms in life, we were unprepared and our poorly built foundation was now being ripped apart.

It isn’t fair we wanted to yell! We didn’t ask for our son to develop a lifetime disease. If only this wouldn’t have happened to us, we would be okay.

Throughout the years we seemed to always be waiting on something to fix our problem such as a raise at work, a tax return, some unexpected windfall of money. When we got that promotion, tax return, new job, when we could take out another loan, etc. then we would be okay.

70% of us have built our financial foundations on poor soil by living paycheck to paycheck. Rather than looking to us as the solution, we are waiting for some lottery type event to happen in our lives. If and when that lottery happens to us we tell ourselves, things will be better.

We definitely lived with this type of attitude for the first 17+ years of our marriage. Always waiting, but never hitting that lottery. When would it come? We were just sure we would “catch a break” someday.

The lottery did come our way, but certainly not how we pictured it would come.

If you are waiting on that lottery in your life to happen, join our blog and follow along our journey. We were once in the shoes of the 70% of Americans that live paycheck to paycheck. If getting personal finances in order seems impossible, you are visiting the right blog!

Many blessings and remember to sign up to receive our blogs as they post.

Just Don’t Come To My Side of the Table

I had a fantastically fun time at my first book signing last night at the TriFitness Store in White Bear Lake. As usual with adventures in life, it seems I got a lot more out of the event than I was expecting.

My goals were to have a great time, make sure my family was included, and be around some great people. Anything outside of this was just icing on the cake. All three objectives were met by the way.

Our oldest child, Maggie (age 12) went with me to the signing. I wanted her to be around an environment of positive people and to have the opportunity to participate in the signing with me (she signed the page with her “Don’t Quet” quote). My wonderful neighbor Laura bravely volunteered to have ALL three boys come over to play.  Things were set in my neat little world.

Off Maggie and I went to rush to the signing after getting the kids fed after work, the dogs out, dinner made, and then the boys over to Laura’s house to play until Bob got home 2 hours later.

There was another author that was scheduled to be there at the ladies night event, but quite honestly, I was concentrating on making the night work around our family schedules after working all day and didn’t pay attention to who it was.

When we arrived, a table was set up for us to sign at. The other author hadn’t arrived. I plunked her stuff down and selfishly thought, okay, “my stuff” goes here and the other person can go over there – mentally, a line had been drawn to split the table in half.

When the author arrived, she was this vibrant woman who was had a positive sense around her. Nice I thought, however, the I still vividly saw the line.  She was extremely gracious and smiled as she asked if she could put a table cloth down. Sure I said, mentally noting her hot pink table cloth matched her book entitled Hot Sweaty Mamas and See Mom Run.

Maggie and I went about her business of setting up when I happened to glance over and see the third book she put out….it made me stop in my tracks. I couldn’t believe my eyes. She put down one of my most favorite triathlon books I had used during my Ironman training journey – it was entitled Becoming An Ironman. Besides my great training book, it was the only other book that I read over and over throughout my yearlong journey. It was FULL of inspiration and gave me the hope to keep going on my journey as it told of people’s experiences of doing their first Ironman triathlon.

Here she was. My mouth dropped. “Are you THAT author?” I accusingly asked as I pointed at that wonderful book with the name Kara Douglass  - her married name was now Kara Thom.  She admitted she was. I went on to gush on and on like an avid fan about how much her book had meant to me. Then, I told her that she was the ONLY author I had ever emailed before as I wanted my finance book of inspirational stories modeled EXACTLY after her Ironman book.  She looked a little embarrassed and asked if she replied back. I said no, but I hadn’t expected her too. I just wanted her to know how much her book had meant to me. She seemed horrified as she said she had a computer crash and that she lost a lot of information and my email was probably in with the crashed items.

To make it a wilder story….her book is the only other book that I currently had in my  computer bag that travels around with me. I want to use it as a template and enjoy having it with me – each worn page reminds me of how I want people to feel when they read our stories of doing extraordinary things in life.

Here she was in person. She said she looked me up and was anxious to read my book – I was secretly embarrassed that I hadn’t thought to go outside my neat little world to extend the same courtesy.

So, the line that was so evident before the evening began was totally invisible to me now.

I gushed to anyone who approached the table that they HAD to reach her book – it was just awesome. Kara in turn graciously said the book was written before her children were born and that my book was the one to read for women with kids as my journey had taken place with three small kids.

Maggie and I both had fun getting to meet such wonderful people and I learned a lot from watching my favorite triathlon author of inspirational triathlon stories interact with people.

The lesson learned was life isn’t always full of harsh lines…sometimes it is a joy when you “let your lines fade”. By doing so, we just may enrich our lives all the more.

Many blessings and thanks for reading. Please consider signing up for our blog to automatically receive posts.
